Has entertainment become so expensive you can’t even take your main squeeze (or new love interest) out for a romantic night on the town? We can help! There are tons of cheap things to do in Kansas City that are sure to impress. We’ve compiled a list of great date night ideas that’ll be easy on your wallet, but won’t leave your date thinking you’re a cheapskate.
Here’s our list. If we left anything out, please leave a comment below and we’ll add it as time allows:
Catch a movie. Indoor movies can be pretty pricey, especially when you add on drinks and snacks. So how about an outdoor movie? We’ve compiled a whole list of summer movies, most of which are FREE. Scroll down to the outdoor movies and you’ll find some adult options. Note the Crown Center WeekEnder event that begins in July. It includes a movie, concert, and food trucks all in one. And it’s all FREE except for the food.
Go to a concert. There are FREE outdoor concerts all over town this summer.
See a Broadway show. The Theater in the Park in Shawnee Mission Park is putting on several Broadway shows this summer. Anytime Tickets that you can use for any show are $8 for adults. Don’t have $16? Through July 2, the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival is doing Hamlet in Southmoreland Park. You can see that show for FREE.
Go to a festival. There are lots of festivals in Kansas City throughout the spring and summer. Some of them even have carnivals. Most are FREE to attend.
Do an art walk. On the first Friday of every month, the galleries in the Crossroads District hold a FREE art walk with exhibits, artist demonstrations, refreshments, and more. Lee’s Summit also has a Fourth Friday art walk. The Englewood Arts Station holds its art walk every third Friday.
Attend a street party. On select Sundays, the Kansas City Power & Light District throws an urban street party on 14th Street between Main and Walnut. Admission is FREE. The roads will be closed, so you can grab a bite to eat at an outdoor table, hear live music, see public art displays, and more.
Catch a ball game. Think minor league. Kansas City T-Bones games are fun, and much less expensive than major league baseball games. Tickets start at $6.50 for lawn seats; $9 for bleacher seats. Parking is FREE.
Listen to live jazz. Kansas City’s known for great jazz music, and there are many places where you can listen to live jazz for FREE.
Go to a museum or art gallery. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Shoal Creek Living History Museum are all FREE. If you’re a Bank of America or Merrill Lynch customer, on the first full weekend of every month, you can go to the WWI Museum for FREE. If all that’s not enough, here’s a list of other Kansas City museums, including any discounts.
Don’t forget dinner. Dinner can be the most expensive part of a date. But it doesn’t have to be. You can get steep discounts at Kansas City restaurants from Groupon or Restaurant.com.
