Shoal Creek Living History Museum is taking Halloween back to 1890 this year.
There will be no trick-or-treating or other modern activities.
Instead, visitors are invited to celebrate Halloween as it was observed in 1890, with period games, storytelling, pony rides, simple costumes, bonfires, music and more fun. There also will be costume contests for children and adults.
A Hallowed Event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 24. Admission is $10 for those 10 and older and $5 for children ages 3 to 9.
Children who were period costumes will receive a small gift.
Some tips from the museum on 1890s-style costumes:
- Wearing clothes inside out or too large was popular.
- Clothing was plain, and common colors were tan, white, blue, brown and black, all solid colors.
- Ghost costumes wear white sheets with eyes cut out (hey, we are still doing this).
- Masks were made or paper or cloth.
