A long-awaited landmark above the Kansas River is finally ready to welcome visitors. Rock Island Bridge opens to the public on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, with an opening weekend spotlight on this one-of-a-kind riverfront destination.

A New Destination Over the River
There is something timeless about an old bridge stretching over the water — the kind of view that makes you pause and imagine the history, engineering, and stories carried across it for generations. Even when a bridge is quiet, it still has a way of reminding us how beautiful these structures can be.
That sense of history is part of what makes the Rock Island Bridge so interesting. What was once an aging railroad crossing is now being reintroduced as a new public destination, shaped by years of planning, construction, and big ideas for how this historic structure could serve the community again.
After years of planning, construction, and upgrades, Rock Island Bridge is set to debut as a two-level destination linking the West Bottoms area near Hy-Vee Arena with Kansas City, Kansas. Instead of simply crossing the river, visitors can now stop, dine, relax, and take in skyline and river views from roughly 60 feet above the water.
The bridge blends public space with entertainment features, making it a place to stroll, meet friends, work remotely, or explore what is expected to become one of the metro’s most talked-about new attractions.

- 🚗 Entry is currently from the east side near Hy-Vee Arena / Kemper area
- 🅿️ Free street parking is available on American Royal Drive
- 🏙 Paid garage parking is available in the West Bottoms Garage
- 👨👩👧 Children are welcome; ages 14 and under must stay with a parent or guardian
- 🐶 Leashed pets are welcome in public areas, except inside the restaurant
- ☔ Covered central sections, wind screens, and heaters help during cooler or wet weather
- 💵 No admission fee is required to visit the bridge
