Despite what’s going on around us right now, Mother’s Day 2020 can still be a special day. Here are some ways to celebrate in Kansas City.
Some are suited for in-person activities, but we also have some things that will work well if you’re apart from your mom. We’ll continue to update this list, especially if we find Mother’s Day freebies or deals offered in 2020 so be sure to check back.

Kansas City Small Business Gift Guide
Spring Chick Gift Guide: Normally the Spring Chick Event would be happening in early May and you could pick up any number of handmade gifts from mom and support a small business owner here in Kansas City. The organizers at Chick Events and Just for Her Events have rallied with an online shopping guide for Mother’s Day. There are nearly 50 local businesses included in the gift guide. Most offer quick turnaround shipping, but a few can do same-day delivery to your door for local orders. Choose from clothes, jewelry, cooking and kitchen items, art and more.
Mother’s Day Cards
Go with a classic card as a standalone or paired with another token of appreciation. Here are a couple of options that are especially good if you’re on a budget or can’t get to the store.
Greetings Island: Choose from nearly 150 online cards you can send online or print out to deliver yourself – all FREE.
American Greetings: Send FREE digital postcards — everything from funny to comforting.
Flowers and Plants
Flowers are a big Mother’s Day tradition. You can think beyond bouquets or a fresh arrangement. Green plants will last longer than fresh cut flowers and can sometimes be transplanted outside. If your mom has a green thumb for gardening, consider buying vegetable plants for her to tend to this season.
Kansas City Farmer’s Markets: More Kansas City farmers markets are opening or doing some form of delivery and/or curbside business. Many offer a variety of fresh flowers, hanging baskets and greenery or garden plants. See our full farmers market post for the latest updates.
Kansas City Rose Society: You can have a rose bush planted in honor of your mother. Bushes are planted in the Laura Conyers Smith Rose Garden at Loose Park in Kansas City, MO. A single rose bush is $30 but there are options for upgrading. Order online and arrange for a hand-written certificate to be sent to your mom.
Family Tree Nursery: Book a 45-minute shopping session at one of Family Tree Nursery’s three locations (Liberty, Overland Park or Shawnee). The number of customers in each store is limited and you can browse the selection personally. The nursery also offers online ordering for curbside pickup.
Westlake Ace Hardware: Whether you’re looking for flowers and plants or want to cross mom’s home improvement projects off the list, Westlake Ace Hardware has locations throughout the metro that have the feel of an old-fashioned community hardware store. Don’t let the nostalgia if this Lenexa headquartered chain fool you. The chain is on top of modern and safe conveniences with in-store shopping and online orders that can be picked up curbside or delivered home.
FREE Wildflower Seeds: If mom wants her own part of nature, be sure she signs up for FREE wildflower seeds from Arm & Hammer.
Free Trees: Mom is a big deal so if you’re going with plants why not go all out for some threes. The Arbor Day Foundation offers 10 FREE trees with a six-moth membership. Memberships start at $10.
