Cinco de Mayo commemorate the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. It’s not that big of a deal in Mexico, but has become quite popular in the U.S.
We’re not real clear as to why Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but who can argue with a holiday that includes margaritas, chips, salsa, tacos and a lot of other good food. This year, Cinco do Mayo in Kansas City won’t be a fiesta in crowded bars and patios, but if you’re looking for ways to celebrate, we’ve got a list of places where you can get deals and discounts on or around May 5, 2020.

Chili’s
Chili’s Presidente Margaritas are available to go at participating locations either pre-mixed or in a margarita kit you can prepare at home. The drinks will be paired with limited edition Cinco de Mayo cups, while supplies last. Alcohol orders need to be combined with a food order.
Chipotle
Chipotle Mexican Grill is celebrating Cinco de Mayo by offering FREE queso blanco and extending its FREE delivery offer through May 10. Fans ordering online or via the Chipotle app can use promo code: QUESO55 at checkout to receive free queso blanco when it is added to an entrée on May 5.
Chuy’s
Chuy’s is offering a limited-edition Cinco Party Kit for $20. Each kit includes 2 Chuy’s branded 18oz Texas Martini shakers and other fun swag. Just add one to your order while supplies last. Chuy’s also taco, fajita, enchilada or nacho meal kits for your celebration. Round out the fun with the right beverages. Mexican beers, including Modelo and Dos Equis, are $3/bottle or $16/six pack. You can also add a margarita kit that comes with house made sour mix, salt, a lime and 375mL of tequila.

House Margarita and Queso Quarts (includes chips) are available at Jose Pepper’s for $20 now through Tuesday, May 5. Pre-order family pack dinners that serve 4-5 people and start at $28.99. All orders come with FREE espinaca con queso, chips and salsa.
Hen House Market
Make your own street tacos at home with an at-home kit from Hen House. Kits come with fresh corn tortillas, chicken asada, cheddar cheese and delicious sauces that make six tacos for $9.99. The grocer also has beer specials for Modelo, Corona, Pacifico and more.
Manny’s Mexican Restaurant
Veteran local destination for Mexican eats and drinks doesn’t let Kansas City down for Cinco de Mayo. Manny’s is offering carry out family meals for $54. Feast on a 12-serving double-layer dish or enchilada or burrito casserole that comes with:
- 48 oz rice
- 16 oz beans
- 32 oz Monterey Dip
- 3 bags of chips
- 16 oz of mild and 8 oz of hot sauce

You can turn your home into a cincotacobration. That’s a Cinco de Mayo and Taco Tuesday celebration all in one. For $25 On the Border is offering a Cinco in a Bag that includes:

- Chips and salsa

Red Kitchen Tamales
Go authentic with pozole rojo from Red Kitchen Tamales. This is a pork and hominy stew seasoned with guajillo pepper, oregano and served with radish, lettuce, onion. Comes with lettuce, radish, onion,limes, spicy pepper and tostadas. Dinner for two people is $15, for four people is $30.

While it almost seems criminal to skip traditional fixings on a day that is both Cinco de May and Taco Tuesday, if you’re craving a burger, you may want to try out Sonic’s new Queso Burger. Available for a limited time, the Queso Buger is a quarter-pound beef patty covered in melty cheddar and zesty cheese sauce with Hatch Green Chiles, topped with grilled onions and creamy mayo on a toasted bakery bun for $3.99.
Tabard’s Ale House
Stop by Tabard’s Ale House in Overland Park for live music and tacos this week. Find a parking spot close to the patio. Call in your order, roll down your windows, and enjoy. Your food will be brought out to you while you enjoy live music from Luther Vincent playing a variety of hit rock songs from 5-7 p.m. this May 5-7.
