July 31 marks the avo-bravado of the big green fruit which is technically a berry.
Also known as the alligator pear, the avocado is center stage on this day. According to LoveOneToday.com, avocado’s are packed with about 20 vitamins and minerals. One-third of an avocado is only 80 calories – but who stops at a third? And Super Bowl fans (and winners) can relate – approximately 53.5 million pounds of guacamole is eaten on Super Bowl Sundays.
And here’s a bonus tip: If you are waiting for that rock-hard avocado to ripen so you can enjoy it, pop it into a brown paper bag with a banana or apple companion. The fruits produce ethylene, a naturally occurring gas, that will speed up the ripening process of the avocado.
