There’s one last chance to tour part of the 200-year-old system of tunnels underneath the sidewalks of Leavenworth.
Candle Queen Candles is hosting the final Tunnel Tour of 2019 on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019 at 2 p.m. Tour costs are $10 with all proceeds being donated to the Leavenworth VFW in honor of Veterans Day.
During this 30-minute tour you get a chance to explore 40 yards of the historic Leavenworth Underground tunnel system that connect throughout the city in the mid-1800s. The tunnels are thought to have been part of the Underground Railroad. The entry underneath Candle Queen Candles is one of only two public accesses still available.
Tickets can be purchased online or ahead of time at the store located Candle Queen Candles located at 500 Shawnee St. in historic Leavenworth, Kansas. You will need to arrive at the store least 15 minutes prior to the tour’s start. If you purchased online, bring a screenshot of the email confirming your purchase.
Due to the stairs, narrow tunnel and uneven floors, this tour is not handicapped accessible.
If the first tour is sold out, they plan to schedule a second tour an hour later and possible more after that if there is demand.
