Compost Collective KC is hosting Pumpkin Smash 2022, a FREE, family-friendly way of composting your Halloween jack-o-lanterns.
Pumpkin Smash 2022 happens Saturday, November 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Urbavore Urban Farm, 5500 Bennington Avenue in Kansas City, MO.
Tour the farm and the composting facility, grab a beer provided by Transport Brewery or some hot cider and enjoy the cathartic release of smashing your own jack-o-lanterns. Smashing tools are provided, but you can bring your own as well.
Kids are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes (one more time!). Snacks, drinks, games and prizes are happening at Pumpkin Smash to make this a fun way of keeping pumpkins out of the landfill.
According to Compost Collective KC, Pumpkins that end up in landfill will decompose and eventually emit methane – a greenhouse gas with more than 20 times the warming effect of carbon dioxide. Plus, chickens and hogs love to be fed pumpkin scraps and seeds.
