On Saturday, June 3, 2017, KC Parks is throwing a Party on the Prairie at Jerry Smith Park. Admission is FREE.
This event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., features family- and environmentally-friendly activities on Jackson County’s only remnant prairie. There will be guided trail hikes, bird walks, hay rides, a plein air quick paint competition, a scavenger hunt, a prairie touch table from Lakeside Nature Center, and more.
Here’s the schedule:
- 9 a.m.: Bird Walk with Sherry Leonardo, Burroughs Audubon Society (please arrive by 8:45 a.m.)
- 9 to 10 a.m.: Quick Paint Artist Check-in
- 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Prairie Touch Table, Prairie Scavenger Hunt, Hay Rides
- 10 a.m. Prairie Hike with Tom Schroeder, Master Naturalist-1.25 mile loop hike
- 10 a.m. to noon: Quick Paint Competition
- 10 a.m. to noon: Live Music. Calvin Arsenia, song writer, singer and harpist, will be joined by jazz saxophonist Mark Southerland to serenade the
- Party on the Prairie. This unique acoustic pairing will perform both songs and standards woven together with improvisational musings.
- 11 a.m.: Free Hot Dog, Chips and Water (until out)
- 11:30 a.m.: Prairie Hike Lite with Tom Schroeder – short, accessible walk to the overlook and back
- 12 to 12:30 p.m.: Quick Paint Voting (People’s Choice)
- 12:45 p.m.: Quick Paint People’s Choice Award
