The Johnson County Library will host a Latino Festival on Saturday, September 4, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Oak Park Neighborhood Library, 9500 Bluejacket, Overland Park, Kansas. Everyone’s invited to attend the free event to experience the Latin-American culture through art, music, poetry, dress, dance and crafts. No registration is necessary.
Performances:
11:00 a.m. Poetry reading by the Latino Writers Collective
11:35 a.m. Mexican dances by Ballet Folklorico of Kansas City. Performers include youth ages 3- 18.
12:15 p.m. ”La Llorona,” a popular legend, presented by Monique Maes in a musical drama interpretation using marionettes
12:30 p.m. Quimbay, a Colombian dance troop, will perform typical dances from Colombia including Cumbia, Mapale , Joropo and others.
1:15 p.m. Makuza, a 9-piece Afro-Latin ensemble will perform Salsa, Merengue, Timba, and Cumbia.
2:15 Fiesta Folklorica will perform Mexican dances from Puebla, Nayarit, Yucatan and Tamaulipas will be presented by Fiesta Folklorica, a dance group from Lawrence, Kansas.

Visit tables representing Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Peru and other countries and enjoy a Latino Art exhibit featuring works by Adolfo Gustavo Martinez, J Carlos Duarte, Jose Faus, Maria Vasquez Boyd, John Bonifacio Moreno and Jeremy Ruzich. Children of all ages are invited to enjoy Latin American games & songs and a variety of crafts. Bring a camera and take your picture wearing a Latin American native outfit.

Hip Hop Academy of Kansas City will direct teens in the creation of a community mural using stenciling and street art techniques.
