The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art traditionally hosts a FREE Juneteenth Celebration at the museum with arts, literature, music, entertainment and education.
This year’s celebration has gone virtual.
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is an abbreviation of ‘June nineteenth.’

Juneteenth Live: Presented by DJ Joe and DJ IceKole, Juneteenth Live features music by Charlotte Fletcher of Charlotte Fletcher & Soigne, Amber “Flutienastiness” Underwood, and Lee Langston with Desmond Mason; poetry by Glenn North; stories from George Pettigrew and Ajia & Phoenix Grae Morris; and dance from Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey.
Clips and Conversations: Listen in as Academy Award-winning filmmaker, co-writer for BlacKkKlansman, and Kansas native Kevin Willmott discusses his repertoire featuring clips from his films through the lens of race, history, identity, and beauty.
Collection Highlights: Explore a selection of art from the Nelson-Atkins collection by Black artists.
Tree of Life Quilt Activity: Learn about the tradition of quilting and make your own Tree of Life paper quilt.
